Coda

Define coda and explain the rules govering the structure of the coda in english

Define coda

Coda is part of the rhyme which consists of the consonants after the peak. It is optional.
eg : house /haus/
/au/ <- peak (vowels)
/s/ <- coda (consonants)

Rules

There are 3 rules governing the structure of the coda in english

Rule 1 ) Nasal Rule

nasal sound can only be followed by a plosive if both are in the same place of articulation.
Eg: hump /hvmp/
/m/ and /p/ are both bilabials and /m/ is nasal while /p/ is plosive.

Rule 2) Final Rule

when there are more than 2 consonants in the coda, the last consonant must be /s/ /t/ /d/ /z/ or /alpha/
Eg: texts /tekst/

Rule 3 ) Voicing Rule

Voiced sound cannot occur after voiceless sound
eg : /bp/ can
/pb/ cannot
