learning disorder - dsylexic

Describe one language problem that is likely to be faced by a child who has been diagnosed with the learning disorder 'dsylexia'

Defintion
- caused by neurological differences in the brain (how the brain processes language)
- this leads to slight differences in the cognitive processes of a dsylexic compared to other children
- not an intellectual disability

weakness
1) weakness in language skills (reading writing or spelling)
2) weakness in phonological awareness, memory and language acquistion

Major problem - phonological problem
Def :
-inability for child to recognise the relationship between symbols and the sounds they represent.
- cannot recognise that words are made up of discrete phonemes /k/ /ae/ /t/

Phonological hypothesis
-postulates that dyslexics have a problem with representation, storage and retrieval of speech sounds

Major problems
- child may have difficulty acquiring 2nd / more languages due to lack of phonological awareness
eg:
-child will have difficulty distinguishing between different sounds in a word
-child will have difficulty learning the sound of the phoneme
- due to the fear of speaking incorrectly, the child will be shy and reserved and confidence level dropped.

Solution
-expose child to a multi-sensory environment, highly structured curriculum.
-exposed children to different forms of language , not only spoken and written (holistic approach)
-created clear phological awareness instruction for child to decode the sounds of the letters.
