Sense, Reference

What do you understand from the term sense and reference?

Sense
- sense is the conceptual meaning of the word (something like dictionary meaning)

Reference
- relationship that exists between the word and the outside reality ( referent)

Denotation
- relationship that exists between the word and the general class of object that it picks out.

Words with sense and reference
- words that can be tied down to some external entity in the real word
for eg: cat
sense - a feline creature with 4 legs and go miao miao
reference - somebody's pet or something which you can see at SPCA or on the streets

Words with no sense but with reference
- words that do not have conceptual meaning but points to something from the real world.
-proper nouns like Alvin, Paula

Words with no reference but with sense
- words that do have conceptual meaning but does not point to anything from the real world.
-mostly mysthical creatures, like dragons, fairies and function words.
