Articulation Disorder

Discuss each speech disorder

Articulation disorder has 2 types of impairments
1) phonetics Disorder
Def : unable to produce certain speech sounds due to structural , motor and sensory impairments which may result in problems in articulation

Example : Person suffering from Parkinson diease
Person may have some form of muscle dystrophy of the vocal muscles which requires him to use alot of energy to produce sounds. speaker requires a great energy to pronounce the words

2) phonological disorder
Def : misarticulation of sounds is not due to physiological reasons

Eg : hissing like a snake can be test to check for physiological defect. Strategy of replacement of phonemes is similar to simplifying adult's set of phonemes

Eg : children have a different set of phonemes which replaces some of the set from adults. eg : /alpha/ may replace the /s/ phoneme . thus thoup is actually soup

However, regional variation must be taken into consideration. A singaporean kid may acquire english slower than a monolingual american child as the sg child has to acquire more than 1 language.

Also, it is important for parents to take note of their children's speech articulation. Although it may sound endearing and cute, articulation disorders can lead to inability to communicate and language intelligible. this is to prevent hampering child's socialization process in future. by the age of 8, child should be able to articulate and produce sounds. If the phonological problem persists, parents should quickly refer to speech therapist
