Speech Disorder - Fluency

Describe each speech disorder - Fluency Disorder

Definition of Fluency Disorder
- abnormal interruptions due to hesitation, prolongation and repetition.

2 types of fluency disorder
1) stuttering
- breakdown in normal flow of speech

Characteristics
-repetition of certain syllable compulsively
-awkaward facial distortion due to using of great energy to complete utterance
-prolonged sounds

Communicative problem
- able to sing without experiencing compulsive repetitions that they face when speaking
- able to speak normal when alone or relaxed
- problem occurs in tensed, anxious situations (severity of condition heightens)

more of a psychological problem
- insecurity
- inferiority and lack and confidence

Bigger problem
the fear of speaking in public may be stemmed from the fear of stuttering which may lead to even lower self confidence as he may not dare to speak in public

2) cluttering
-fluency disorder mistakened as stuttering due to some similarites
- is a condition of disorder of time of rhythm, characterised by unorganised hasty short burst of speech, slurred articulation and breaks in fluency.

Characteristics
-Short bursts of speech and speak super fast
-stumble on words therefore listener might find great difficulty in understanding
-speech sounds, syllables and words may be distorted and omitted

Language disability
Seen as a language disorder as ppl who clutter experience picking up language skills; delayed language development

Bigger problem
Clutterers do not think that they have a problem. Presume they speak a little faster than normal people
