- varieities of a language that differ in syntax, vocab and pronunication

Def - Linguistic perspective
- dialects are mutally comprehensible but languages are not.

-Dialects that are mutually un-intelligible are considered 2 different languages.

Def - Sociolinguistic perspective
- dialects are all from 1 standard language; daughter of the mother language
Eg : teochew, hokkien and hakka are all considered dialects of the same mother language; chinese although the only chinese thing that all are intelligible is the similar writing system
