Accent

Write short notes on the following terms and provide an example

Accent

Definition
-dialect that differs in pronunication
- pronunciation characteristics of a particular group of people relative to another.

Dialect?
Accent is not a dialect. Dialects are varieties of language that differ in vocab, syntax and pronunciation

Accent essential to tell about a person's linguistic background.
Nobody will be without an accent and there is no standard accent although Received Pronunciation is recognisd in many parts of the world

Eg: A person from New York will feel that a person from England is speaking with an accent.
The person from New York probably has a different accent from the person from England.

Eg: It is easy to differentiate between a person who speaks with a British accent from a person who speaks with an American accent.
British speaks with a non-rhotic accent, they do not pronounce the postvocalic r.
Americans speak with a rhotic accent and pronunces the postvocalic r /ka:r/
Even people from Australia have a different accent from people from the above mentioned
countries
