Qn) What questions must be answered in order to determine whether a person's speech is impaired?
Speech is considered impaired when it deviates from the norm that
1) it calls for attention to itself
qn- Is the speech conspicuous in a negative way?
Eg : the nasalised way that Australians tend to possess is not considered a speech impairment as it is a common trait found in many Australians.
Eg : people with cleft palate tend to talk in a nasalised manner that calls for attention. This is due to the air leak from the nose known as nasal emission of sounds.
2) it interferes with communication
qn- Is speech intelligible?
eg :unique features of speech that exist within the varieties of el makes it difficult for speakers from other varieties to understand.
However, this is not considered as speech impairment but, differences due to social and regional variation
Eg : stuttering
Prolong sounds and repetition of certain syllable compulsively die to stress/ anxiety/ fear may lead to problems of talking
3) it causes distress to both the listener and the speaker
qn- Does the speech cause distress to the speaker and the listener?
Eg-A person who is stuttering may cause distress to the listener who may perceive speaker to be using great physical force to complete the utterance.
