Do parents play an important role in child language acquistion? Explain
Yes, parents do play an important part in child language acquistion.
Based on learning hypothesis, children are believed to acquire language through adult reinforcement and feedback.
Behavorisum, a study of behaviour unike internaml mental processes, can objectively be observed, measured, recorded and evaluated. Children's behavior in this case is believed to be conditioned by external forces.
Skinner believes that children acquire language through a series of feedback and reinforcement mainly from parents and caregivers which children are able to learn to produce appropriate sentences.
Operant condition
Parents provide shaping throught positive reinforcement like smiling, praising and approving as child tries to correct use of language
Imitation
Parents point to an object and say ball. child models and seeks parents' approval. this is yet another form of positive reinforcement
However, this hypothesis does not explain why soem children are able to produce utterances even without reinforcement and feedback. Also, sometimes, even with explicit correction, child fails to produce the correct utterance.
for eg: a mother's repeteated attempt of the correct sentence, but child still uses double negatives.
