-involves switching from one language to another when there is a change in setting.
Cccurs when the speaker has 2 or more languages/ varieties of languages at his disposal
Eg:
Child speaks to English teacher in English in class.
However, when the class ends, child may switch to her mother tongue or a language she's more comfortable with to converse with her friends.
