Language Planning

Explain the concept of Language planning in Singapore context and illustrate with example

Definition
Language planning is a deliberate change; changes in the systems of the language code and speaking which is done by institutions established or given instruction for such purposed

Multilingual situation in Singapore
- language planning happens most often in multilingual countries and situation.
Eg: singapore
Language planning by the government can be seen in bilingual policies in the education system.

Two types of language planning

Status planning
-determine the type of status to accord to the language spoken in the country
for eg:
-there are 4 official languages in singapore,
-english is the de facto national language and medium of instruction in all schools.
-it is also the language used in official domains

Corpus planning
- determine what linguistics features are standard for that language spoken in the country
for eg:
- speak good english movement launched in 2000
-aim to encourage singaporeans to speak internationally intelligible english.
