Discuss the term Motherese. Why do parents talk in this way and how does this help in language acquistion
Definition
Motherese is language spoken by caregiver to child. It is clear, simple, well formed speech which promotes language learning.
The caretaker in this case, is a provider of linguistic material while allowing child to develop basic language structure
Characteristics of Motherese
1) 2 syllables, ending with /I/ or /i:/
2) many repetition for stress
3) simple sentence structure
4) lowered speech pace
5) high pitch
6) clearer articulation
Function of Motherese
1) Analytical function
a- use of stress and longer duration on verbs for greater emphasis to the main info units
b- rising intonation at the end of the sentence to signal completion of a ling unit
2) social function
a-rising intonation to show that the adult's part is ending
b-higher picture to signal to the child that the utterance is directed to him.
